Damascus Steel: What it is, Where it Comes From, and Why It’s Great
Damascus steel is a specific kind of material that is made by means of layering different metals on top of each other and binding them by means of heat treatment. In the end, this produces a solid block of multi-layered metal from which blades are cut.
What is the point of this approach? Well, having many layers of different types of metal increases its strength and it also allows blades to be incredibly sharp. In addition, from an aesthetic perspective, it produces a wave-like pattern on the face of the blade. The pattern on every blade is unique (if it’s properly made) and it’s very attractive.
Now, what we call Damascus steel today isn’t quite the same as the material it was named after. Indeed, the original Damascus steel was used in ancient Syria to make knives and swords, but the method that was used to make it was lost during the 18th century. Thus, the process that we use today is more like a best guess of what the original process was – it was put together by means of studying ancient Damascus steel artefacts.
Indeed, modern Damascus steel is made by means of pattern welding, and regardless of how different or similar it is to its original version, it’s still one of the best materials for making knives to this day due to it impeccable quality.
Why the Bamboo Guy Recommends a Damascus Sakimaru Knife?
So, clearly Damascus steel is a great material for knife blades, but what makes it ideal for Sakimaru knives?
Well, Sakimaru knives are intended to be super sharp because they’re designed to deal with delicate fish. As we said, you need a knife that can cut cleanly and precisely, and that’s why Damascus steel is perfect. It can be super sharp, and the fact it offers great edge retention is also a bonus. It means that you don’t need to sharpen it very often, which is good, because it’s not ideal to sharpen a special (or delicate) knife a lot as it shortens its lifespan.
At the end of the day, Damascus steel boasts all the qualities that are important for Sakimaru knives.
